About Us

Boy Scout Troop 166 is located in Randolph, New Jersey and meets every Thursday from 7:30 – 9:00 PM at Millbrook United Methodist Church on Millbrook Road in Randolph. We welcome anyone who wants to learn more about our Troop and Scouting.

We believe that helping our youth is the key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society. Through our Scoutmaster, Fred Zelley, patrol leaders, trained adult leaders and parent volunteers, we offer a fun, safe environment that teaches our boys the values and morals they need to become outstanding citizens in our community. The troop has been described as having a strong family atmosphere because of its strong emphasis on family participation and involvement.

One of the things that make the Boy Scout program unique from other youth groups is that the boys plan their own program, with the final approval being given by the troop committee. The scout program is run by the Patrol Leaders Council (PLC). They meet once a month to plan the next month's program details, make preparations for the next troop outing and plan the yearly calendar. Older boys are assigned to younger boys as mentors. The older scout then helps the younger with rank advancement and scouting skills. Scouts learn essential skills through advancements and study diverse fields through the merit badge program.

Troop 166 likes to incorporate FUN into our programs too...a boy will not stay in scouting if he is not having fun. The Boy Scout program is designed to take place outdoors; therefore our main activity is camping on a monthly basis. It is in the outdoor setting that Scouts share responsibilities and learn to live with one another. In the outdoors the skills and activities practiced at troop meetings come alive with purpose. Every year we attend a week long resident summer camp at BSA Camp Barton on Cayuga Lake in Trumansburg, New York

We also enjoy other exciting activities including backpacking/hiking, climbing, whitewater rafting, , cycling, shooting, archery, winter sports and many other activities.

We are happy to welcome new Scouts at any time, whether you're bridging from Cub Scouts or have no previous Scouting experience. Boys who are at least 11 years old or 10 years old and have completed the 5th grade; but not yet 18 years old may join our scouting program. You need not start your scouting experience at age 11; you may start at any age between 11 and 18.
